Deluxe France do recommend during your stay in Provence to spend a market day in Isle sur La Sorgue
This compact, medieval Provençal town is built on five islands in the Sorgue River. Its source is a spring at Fontaine-de-Vaucluse. This lovely town is worth visiting for its Venetian-style bridges, canals and ubiquitous waters. It is also home to a sprawling market on Sundays. Here you will find mostly local produce, meats and cheeses, though there are vendors selling typical Provence-inspired wares. tablecloths, antiques, soaps, etc. As you cross the Sorgue River and shop in market stalls alongside giant moss-covered water wheels. You’ll be glad you stopped in this little town during one of your private tour of Provence.
For more than 40 years, the flea market has helped forge the identity of the town, giving it an international reputation. In 1890 Joseph Légier set up his antique shop in L’Isle sur la Sorgue. Later on, the first antique fair in August 15, 1966 was a great success.
Nowadays, L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue fair is larger than that of Saint-Ouen and is second only to the famous London fair, Europe’s largest antiques trade salons. Over time, antique shops, and art galleries have developed in the area. They are now a major part of the economic activity of the town.
L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is now the permanent capital of the trade, concentrating a large number of professionals in one place.
